Thomas Lotito

Tom Lotito has been an independent piano tuner and rebuilder in the New York/New Jersey area since 1981. Assisting clients in homes, schools, churches, concert halls, clubs restaurants and recording studios, Tom’s creative piano skills have contributed to his success. Tuning and rebuilding pianos for private clients, notable piano builders and retailers as Steinway & Sons, Sohmer & Sons, Hale Piano & Organ, Pianos Plus, Rockaway Music and Morristown Pianos.

Tom Lotito’s passion for pianos began when he was sixteen years old and a neighbor gave his family a piano that needed repair. From there, Tom’s interest in pianos grew into a full-time career. Tom’s first job in the piano industry was as an apprentice at Sohmer & Son’s piano factory in Queens NY from 1981- 1982. Tom then worked at Steinway Hall in NYC until 1984.

While working at Steinway, Tom began a part-time tuning apprentice at Hale Piano and Organ in Woodbridge, NJ. Tom stayed with Hale piano and Organ until 1988 when he opened up his piano tuning, refinishing and rebuilding business, and is still in operation today.

Tom tunes pianos by ear, keeping alive an art that is more difficult to find in a world of electronic tuning devices. He is also a top-notch refinisher and has finished hundreds of pianos, while also maintaining an active schedule repairing and refinishing furniture (you can find his furniture repair work at frpguy.com).

Testimonials

Jim McMullen. Far Hills N.J

“For the last several years Thomas Lotito has lovingly cared for my 1925 Steinway grand. During that time he has restored both the casing and the mechanical elements to near original condition. I have used several other people, including Steinway, over the 30 years that I have had the piano and not one compares to Mr. Lotito. His service is professional and his prices are more than fair. There is no question that this is a labor of love for Mr Lotito.”

“Thank you so much for all you've done or my piano, and for me and Daniel. The new bass strings are gorgeous and they sing beautifully.

“I just want to let you know how pleased I am with your work, and your very positive work attitude to achieve the best results possible. As you might know, I had poor experiences earlier with other tuners and had almost given up restoring the sound and the action quality of my piano. I was planning to abandon my piano and go to an electronic, digital piano out of frustration.

One day I was looking where to buy a digital piano and I noticed your ad said you formerly worked for 'Steinway & Sons technical staff' in NYC. At that point I immediately contacted you. Now, after a very long time I'm back to playing my piano everyday, and as you know know, I'm very taken with my 80 year old Baby Grand.

With deep appreciation for your experience, expert work, and especially your own love for the instrument. The sound has been restored to the way it was many years ago, mellow, yet strong, the action is great. You have my best personal appreciation, and most certainly my endorsement for your professionalism and the quality of your work.
